In Every Hour of the Day Reveal Your Will to Me

In Every Hour of the Day Reveal Your Will to Me

Like many of us, I create checklists of things I need to do.  If it’s a complicated day, I number the items in priority order by what I most desire to accomplish, what is most necessary, and what I can discard if the day goes awry. This is a way of revealing my will for my day.

It’s harder to discern God’s will for my day. There is no checklist to help me sort out His will. What if I’m outside of His will and don’t even know it? What if He wanted me to be somewhere else and do something completely different and I messed up those plans long ago? I feel anxious if I worry about finding His specific plan or if I try to figure out the grand scheme for my life.

What is God’s will and how could it be revealed to me?

Maybe His will is not that narrow. If I would loosen my grip on my own plans and notions, maybe then I’d pause to consider what God has asked of me:

He has shown you, O man, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.
— Micah 6:8

No matter how my day progresses, or where I live, or who I’m with, there are ways I can live justly, love mercy and walk humbly with my God. I don’t have to be doing some dramatic ministry to fulfill this. I can be doing my daily chores, caring for my family, or even walking my dog and still stumble upon opportunities to seek His will by remembering that I’m walking with Him.

God’s will can be slowly and mysteriously revealed to us through everyday moments as we walk humbly with Him.

O Lord, grant me to greet the coming day in peace, help me in all things to rely upon your holy will.

In every hour of the day reveal your will to me.

Bless my dealings with all who surround me.

Teach me to treat all that comes to me throughout the day with peace of soul and with firm conviction that Your will governs all.

In all my deeds and words, guide my thoughts and feelings.

In unforeseen events, let me not forget that all are sent by you.

Teach me to act firmly and wisely, without embittering and embarrassing others.
Give me strength to bear the fatigue of the coming day with all that it shall bring.
Direct my will, teach me to pray.
And you, yourself, pray in me.
Amen.
